You are Free from the Power of Addiction

I am free from ________. How would you fill in that blank? Maybe you fill it with a certain habit or addiction; maybe a person’s name!

Romans 6: 7, 8, and 14 state, “For one who has died has been set free from sin. Now if we have died with Christ, we believe that we will also live with him. For sin shall have no dominion over you, since you are not under law but under grace.” Romans 7:4 states, “Likewise, my brothers, you also have died to the law through the body of Christ..” Romans 8:1 states, “There is therefore now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus. For the law of the Spirit of life has set you free in Christ Jesus from the law of sin and death”.

What it Means to Be Free from The Law

Being free from the law and free from sin go together. You are free from sin because you are free from the law.

1 Corinthians 15:56,57 state, “The sting of death is sin, and the power of sin is the law. But thanks be to God, who gives us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ.”

The sting of death is sin, and the power of _______ is the law. Fill in the blank with something you struggle with. Meditate. What if the power that comes from what you are tempted with was not from sin, your environment, or the people you are around, but the law?

Free from the Power of Addiction

Here is an example. You struggle with pornography and desire sobriety. Most times you talk to your friend or accountability partner-you share that you have viewed pornography in the past week or month. All you want is to be sober. When you have gone 2 or 3 weeks without viewing porn you fear that you will view it again. You are sober, fearful, and don't feel free.“It’s just a matter of time before I do it again.” The power in being fearful of viewing porn is the law; that you will be accepted and righteous based off of your own good works of sobriety. Fighting pornography or ________ (fill in the blank) is so much easier when you realize that you don’t actually gain any kind of righteousness or moral uprightness from fighting. You are free from the law not because you have been successful at resisting difficult habits but because Jesus Christ has died so that you are no longer under law but under grace.

Be encouraged. You are free from sin, and it’s power, because you are free from the law. Check out more of our addiction blogs.
