The Design of God's Love
Functioning out of how you and I have been designed is so important; But there are pitfalls that we all fall into, some subtle.
“I need to love this person in order for her to love me.” Or, “I need to love sex in order for sex to love me.” “I need to love the gym so that the gym can love me.” In these examples, wanting something or someone to love you back (or benefit from) is dependent on you striving, loving, and going after it first.
You are primarily designed to be loved by God. Consider the example above. I need to love the gym in order to get love back from it, bigger muscles and more confidence. You have to engage in the gym in order to receive back. The gym nor sex can ever love you first though. Think about something in your life that you strive after that can never love you first.
It’s very difficult to know the love of God if you are trying to love him first. Let’s think about the Bible. What if everything was true in the Bible about God and that God did not love you. Picture it, he would be a distant, ruling king and not a close, caring father. How strange would this be? Unfortunately we treat God this way; That he doesn’t love you or me, but He’s right about how to go about life.
Be Loved by Him
God sent Jesus to die for you, while you were still a sinner (Romans 5:8), proving that that you were primarily designed to be loved by Him. He is not just right about how to go about life! The good news of Jesus Christ is that I did not love God but He loved me, sending Jesus to die for me, so that I might have a relationship with God. This is design, a relationship with God, founded on His love for you.
“In this is love, not that we have loved God but that He loved us and sent His son to be the propitiation for our sins.” -1 John 4:10
